Dreams smashed, new goals set

I didn't get the unpaid leave I applied for, so there will be no Comrades for me this year. I did get four days of long service leave approved, so I'll be at UTA100 this year doing that in stead.

With a sore back at the end of January, my running was interrupted for about two weeks. Long runs are only up to about 35km, so that's not the best. But I'm doing about 6 hours, so that's a start.

My parkrun goal of doing a sub 30 minute each week has also not eventuated either. With a sore back, I missed two parkruns and last week I nearly didn't run either, but ended up heading out and finishing in 30 minutes 22 seconds. Run naked, so just ran on effort and took it easy.

Readjusting my parkrun goal and aiming for a sub 30 for 40 runs during this year (rather than every run!). I'll miss parkrun on the UTA100 and 3 Marathons in 3 Days race days.

Adjusting my sub-11 Comrades goal to a UTA100 18 hour finish. That's just out of my league, especially having been hampered with a sore back. Doing Blackall 100 in 19 hours, doesn't fill me with too much confidence as UTA is harder. But I'm still going to give it a go and if I can finish in under 24 hours I'll be happy.

Memories from my second Comrades

This week's mileage:
Monday - rest
Tuesday 12
Wednesday 3
Thursday 14.5
Friday - rest
Saturday 5, parkrun 27:10
Sunday 15 - from home to Lake Morris Road and back.

I downloaded the Comrades special from 2012 from Talk Ultra and listened to it while doing my long run up and down Lake Morris yesterday. It made me think about my 2014 down run, which I am hopefully going to get to do again this year. My leave is yet to be approved.

My goal was a sub-11 for 2014, but it was not to be. I missed my sister just before the half way point and didn't hang around to catch her - she had gone off to the toilet! I ended up not making it to the half way point in the time I had set and was about 2-3 minutes off my pace. With the down run, that is probably not too much of a problem as you can make up some time going down the hills in the second half of the race.

I did think about the fact that I was coming home and doing the 3M3D, so didn't want to 'kill' myself on Comrades. But no such aspirations this year. I intend to run on pace and run at my limit to get that sub-11 and collect my bronze medal. I have two Vic Claptons and my back to back medal, but I think it's time to aim for the bronze. One mistake I made on the last down run was to not have splits often enough. I'm going to check the course and work out how fast I need to go for each kilometre this year.

The one photo is taken on Lake Morris Road from one of the lookouts. It's part of the 3rd day of the 3M3D, so I'll be back there on 10 July, all going good. But I can't see that I'll be doing a good 3M3D this year, based on my performance when I did the Comrades in previous years and then tried to back it up with the 3M3D! In the other photo you can just see the full moon coming up. Lovely sight on the way home today.

Looking forward to my rest day tomorrow.

Feet got a bit tender after running on super hot bitumen on Wednesday. Spent 2hrs in Kuranda walking from shop to shop handing out letters requesting support for the 3 Marathons in 3 Days. Barron Falls don't have much water. A really hot day! Spent
about 1 hr at Redlynch Shopping centre on Wednesday looking for support for the Dynamic in a Dress race.

Comrades long run #3

Freshie Loop this arvo. Superslow. Walked, stopped for a gatorade 7k in. And walked some more. The stopped for a fanta slushie and 1 scoop of Tailwind. That purked me up a bit and got me home. Did 29 of the 30k for today. Listened to an ultra run podcast for about 1 hour then my phone died.

Clifton Beach to Palm Cove return

Nice morning run with Chrissy and Donna. 11km. Left early and weather was good. Program asks for 30km, so I'm going to go out and do the 17km Freshie Loop this afternoon and be happy with that for today.
